Gateway to Hope Garden Tour Scheduled for June 14-16
The third annual Central Iowa Gateway to Hope Garden Tour is slated for the weekend of June 14 through 16. Tour proceeds will fund arts camps and Bible schools for Nicaraguan children from the poorest of the poor neighborhoods in Chinandega, where Faith Church of Pella is building a long-term relationship with five area churches. The tour is organized by Friends of Chinandega, a ministry of Faith Church.
The 2013 tour features three gardens in Pella and three country gardens—including Stonypoint, a five-acre garden near Reasnor, Iowa. Stonypoint garden, frequently used as a destination for weddings and reunions, has not been featured in a garden tour since 2006.
New attractions for this year’s tour include a Saturday lunch at the
Stonypoint barn and van transportation to the three country gardens each day of the tour. Lunch includes a deluxe walking taco, cookie or bar, and drink for
a cost of $5.00. The van service provides a four-hour tour of the country gardens, round trip from Faith Church at 215 East University in Pella each day of the tour. The cost is $10 and seats may be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis by calling 641-628-1636. Deadline for seat reservations is June 7.
“This year’s tour is especially accessible,” says Carol Van Klompenburg, tour team chair. “In addition to the van transportation,
all three in-town sites are back-yard neighbors. Visitors can park once and then enjoy all three gardens.” The Pella gardens belong to David and Nelda Pealer, 1007 E. 3rd Street; Jim and Julie Mueller, 1008 E 2nd Street; Glenn and Shirley Borgman; 411 Lincoln.
The country gardens are owned by Alvin and Milly Van Dyke, 392 223rd Place, Pella; Carol Olson, 11792 E 86th St , Reasnor; and Melvin and Karen Poortinga, 3241 Ranch Ave, Reasnor.
The tour is self-guided, and visitors may begin at any garden. Tour maps are available at each location. Admission is by donation, with a suggested minimum donation of $10. As they become available, a tour map and additional tour details will be posted on this blog.
